All about Zakynthos

Churches dedicated to the Apostle Paul are rare, and the same is true on the island of Zakynthos. It is located in the village of Pano Meria, built before 1577. It belonged to the Varzos family and in 1835, it was granted to the church so that it could survive. It was demolished and then burnt down in August 1953 and today it exists only as a memory and as a place name. A characteristic custom was the custom in which on the eve of the feast day of 29 June the unripe raisin was hung on the bell tower, preparing the season for the harvest. The raisin or "black gold" was one of the main products of Zakynthos, which brought wealth to the island and thus prosperity to other sectors.
