Nature Zakynthos Zakynthos
The island of Stamfani and Arpia are the Strofades islands. They are located 27 nautical miles south of the island of Zakynthos and about 28 nautical miles from the west coast of the Peloponnese. A castle-monastery of about 1200 was built in Stamfani, in which Saint Dionysios, patron saint of Zakynthos, lived and was buried as per his wish. The Strofades Islands are part of the national marine park of Zakynthos and belong to the Natura 2000 network, as the ecosystem is of high importance, since many migratory birds find shelter. Also, many cetaceans are recorded due to the large submarine fault in the area. (Photo by: Georgios Karris / Ionion University)
