All about Zakynthos

The then Prefect Andreas Ioannou, formed the Kalvos Square in the place where the Agios Nikolaos ton Geronton (of the elders) was before the earthquake. He then transferred, from the central cemetery also a marble memorial column, the work of Jacob Malakate (1808 - 1903), on which the following were engraved: "Zakynthos crowns Andrean Calvon, its Great Son". On the back of the column, the verses from Kalvos' poem 'Philopatris' are written: "Oh Friendly motherland/Oh wondrous island/Zacynthus. Thou hast given me the breath, and the gifts of gold of Apollo!"
