The Voultsos family has been living in Zakynthos since 1503.

On 5 July 1571 the Turks invaded Zakynthos and on the orders of Captain Bartholomew Volterra, the soldier of Kalipades Ioannis Voultsos and Ioannis Gaetas were sent as scouts in order to determine the place from where the enemies would attack.

During the reconnaissance they met numerous Turks and in the ensuing scuffle Vultos died. The next day, his son Antonios showed great bravery in battle and was promoted to captain of the soldiers of the village of Kalipado.

In 1817 Dionysios Voultsos participated in the preliminary council that drafted the constitution and in the committee that submitted it to the Viceroy of Great Britain in London. He served as Prefect of Zakynthos from 1823 to 1827.

In 1953, the MP of Zakynthos, Gigi (Francis) Voultsos, announced in a telegram to the Ministry of Interior: 'I am sad to report that the city of Zakynthos has ceased to exist in substance, having been completely destroyed by the earthquakes. The ruins are burning because of the fires. "
