Varzos mansion
History
Zante Town
Zante Town
The Varzos family settled in Zakynthos before 1507 and was enrolled in Chrysovivlo in 1580.
She owned the church of Agios Pavlos, which was the centre of the homonymous quarter.
During the period of the first French occupation, the "former nobleman" Nicholas Varzos used to philosophise with Voltaire and Rousseau as his models.
He turned against the aristocrats and the Christians and, carried away by his "idiosyncrasy", as Chiotis stresses, he mocked God and people.
Varzos gave an enthusiastic speech at the celebration of the Union of the Ionian Islands with the French Republic
