Stravopodi Stylianou house
History Zante Town Zante Town

In 1806, new quays were constructed in the area of the port of Zakynthos, and in one of them, next to the quay of the Logothetis mansion, the house of Stylianos Stravopodis was built.

The free peasant Stylianos Stravopodis, son-in-law of Antonios Martinegos from his first marriage and of Count Nikolaos Solomos (father of the national poet) from his second marriage, was written in the new libro d'oro in 1800. In 1801 he participated in the separatist government of Zakynthos and after the return to the established order he was appointed military commander.

In 1803 he received the rank of colonel.

According to Zampelis, it is not known whether he was descended from nobility, but he made a fortune and played one of the main roles during the times when Antony Martinez, his brother-in-law, was wandering around Zakynthos.

In 1818 he was included in the list of merchants of Zakynthos announced by the Ionian Parliament and in 1819 he was initiated into the Society of Friends.

In 1821 he co-signed a petition to King George IV asking for a change in the Constitution. A few days later he was imprisoned in the castle of Zakynthos along with other signatories and from there he was taken to a warship that took him to Corfu without saying goodbye to his family. In August of the same year he was exiled to Venice, from where he returned a few years later to Zakynthos where he lived until his death.
