Sculpture for Anthimos Argyropoulos
Sculpture Zante Town Zante Town
In 1971, in the square of Metropolitan Alexios Iglesis (1911 - 1966), next to the Metropolitan Hall, a small-scale brass full-face statue was placed on a base made of chiseled thorns of Gerakas, with the figure of the fighter, hieromonk Anthimos Argyropoulos (1768 - 1847), vicar of the church of St. George of the Latino family, the work of the sculptress Irini Phramantiotis-Hariati (1918-2009? ).  Argyropoulos. was born in 1768 in Ioannina. When he was Abbot of the Monastery of the Theotokos in Theodoriana of Tzoumerka, he fell out of favour with Ali Pasha because he was treating those persecuted by him. Thus he was thrown into prison, where he remained for 18 months and was released through the intercession of several chieftain friends. He went first to Corfu and was afterwards appointed vicar of the church of St. George of the Latins. There he worked for the struggle of 1821 by catechizing and swearing in the Friends. He died blind on 20 January 1847. He was buried in the Church of the Crucified in Zakynthos.  The sculpture depicts a facial features roughly, while the long robe leaves uncovered the hands with which he holds the chalice of the Holy Communion. The work, with Hariati's characteristic expressionist style, its unnatural proportions and the fine form, is one of the few modern sculptures that adorn the island."
