On November 9, 1717, the English captain William Sargent sailed, according to Zois, for the first time in Zakynthos with the ship "William".
He liked the island and decided to stay and live on it.
According to Loudzi, however, the Sargent family had been living in Zakynthos since 1680.
The Sargent were active in Zakynthos as shipowners and consuls and their house as a consulate.
William's Sargent grandson Robert served as vice-consul of Great Britain in Zakynthos from 1759.
Robert's brother Richard served as consul of the Netherlands in 1791 and 1802.
Richard's son, Anastasios (1826-1882) was consul to America until his death in 1882.
George Sargent, consul of Portugal and England since 1917, was exiled to Assisi in 1941 and after his exchange moved to London where he died in 1945.
The Sargent mansion during the period of British protection housed the courts after the Unification of the Ionian Islands with Greece was returned to the family.
