The triangular square of Foros, St Mark's Square, Clock Square, Poet's Square, Dionysios Solomos Square, Pantocrator's Square at the beginning of the 20th century, Victor Emmanuel King Emperor Square during the years of the Italian occupation, Republic Square shortly after the liberation, George II Square, and again Republic Square after 1978, has been the centre of political, social and cultural life of Zakynthos from the early Venetian era until today.

Foros was paved at the beginning of the 18th century, with slabs of the mountain Katastari. The work began on 5 March 1712 under the provνeditor Bragadin Pietro and was completed in 1714 under the provνeditor Capello Vettone. The costs of the construction were borne by the "Magnificent Community" of Zakynthos.
