History Zante Town Zante Town

During the Venetian rule, the prisons were in the Castle and when the authorities settled in the city, then various buildings were used as detention centers.

In 1820, during the English Protectorate, it was decided by the First Ionian Senate to build prisons on all the Ionian islands. For this purpose, the penitentiary was built in 1830 in the area of Agia Triada, which was destroyed by the earthquake of 1953.

Today the church of Agia Triada stands in the place of the Prisons.
