All about Zakynthos

Zakynthos was the political base of the Lombardos club, which was founded by Konstantinos Lombardos. Konstantinos Lombardos was born in Zakynthos and actively participated in the movement for the union of the Ionian Islands with Greece. It turned out to be one one of the most consistent democratic politicians of the second half of the 19th century.

The "Lombardiano" or "Katou Casino" was the political centre of the Laikon (from the people). The Lombard Cultural Association "The Brotherhood" was founded in 1849 by a hundred craftsmen, who formed a kind of club. On October 23, 1877 it was renamed "New Brotherhood" and after the death of Konstantinos Lombarvos in 1888, it was renamed into the Cultural Association "Lombardos", with the aim of supporting the national and liberal principles which "were set in politics by the great citizen of Zakynthos and the great citizen of Zakynthos, the legendary Konstantinos Lombardos". The building that housed the works was located in the right wing of the Municipal Theatre 'Foskolos'. It had spacious halls for dances, receptions, lectures, with lounges, ballrooms and a reading room, which were furnished with old oil paintings of the Venetian Carnival.
