In the year 1839, in the then economically and culturally flourishing Zakynthos, the Liberal Club (Friends of Eleftherios Venizelos) was founded and was renamed as the "Club of Zakynthos", also known as the "Roman Casino".

In 1860, the members of the Club decided to erect a building in the historic square of St. Mark's, with the intention not to be used solely for the entertainment of the members, but mainly for the creation of a stock exchange and a chamber of commerce, where merchants and all citizens would meet daily to conduct their affairs and improve the economic situation of the island.

Famous for its piazza and its arched doors with surrounding balconies and its famous interior, which had ballrooms for dancing, billiards, reading room, games, etc. N. Varvianis notes that during the carnival dances, the order that prevailed was exemplary and Zakynthian society showed its civilisation to the full.

The Club was a decisive factor in the political, economic and cultural life of the area and in the spacious halls of its Hall, great personalities of Zakynthos and the Panhellenic scene of the politics of Arts and Letters met.
