Short-beaked Common Dolphin
Fauna Zakynthos Zakynthos
The Dolphin (Delphinus delphis) is recorded in coastal areas of Greece with depths of up to 200 meters. Today its populations have decreased dramatically. The same goes for the Ionian sea, where in the 1990s, in the inland sea of Lefkada, there was still a fairly healthy population, which collapsed in the following years. Oil pollution, contamination from the accumulation of artificial chemicals in their tissues, nuisance, climate change, noise pollution, harassment from yachts, military exercises and hydrocarbon exploration threaten all species of dolphins but also dolphins. Today there are small groups, as well as near Zakynthos and further north between Diapontia, Corfu and Paxos.
