Pelouzo
Place South East Zakynthos South East Zakynthos
On the uninhibited island of Pelouzo the turtles Caretta Caretta are free to lay their eggs undisturbed since the access is very difficult. It belongs to zone A of the National Marine Park where during summer months it is closed to both boats and fishing. The island is beautiful and untouched, slightly mountainous with dense vegetation and rocky shores. On the side that is adjacent to Dafni you will find Pelouzos only beach with fine, talcum power like sand and an old ruined building, on the opposite side the scene changes and there is  a beautiful cave. During the Venetian rule Pelouzo belonged to the Catholic monastery of St. Francis and was given to the monk Angel Salviati, it was here where he built a monastery and church dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Evangelistria. Pelouzo later became the property of the family that today owns 'Komoutou'. The abbey and the church were bombed by the Germans during the second world war and then almost completely destroyed by the earthquake of 1953. These are the old ruins you can see on the beach. The best view of Pelouzo is to be seen from Dafni beach where Pelouzo dominates the view that of which overwhelms you!
