Sea Route Limni Keri - Marathonisi Keri Caves
The route starts from Keri Lake. Located about twenty kilometers from Zakynthos town, the small village of Limni Keriou is located on the slope of Cape Marathia, just opposite the island of Marathonisi. Lake Keri covers an area of only 282 acres and is completely dried during the summer months. It is known mainly for the petroleum oil that gushes. It is characterized by a beautiful small beach with pebbles shaded by some pine trees and surrounded by many local taverns that, especially after dark, create a very special atmosphere.
The route continues to Marathonisi, a small private island in the bay of Laganas and very close to Lake Keri. The island is full of olive trees, oaks and pine trees. The fennel, from which it has taken its name, also has a prominent place. The island had inhabitants until the Second World War, while today it is uninhabited and without any constructions and is one of the breeding sites of the Caretta Caretta sea turtle. It is included in the marine park and also in the Natura 2000 protection network.
The island offers a choice between two wonderful beaches, one with pebbles and the other with white sand. While the sandy beach is ideal for sun lovers, the pebble beach is perfect for snorkeling lovers, who can visit the large cave (right of the beach), as well as some smaller caves half submerged in water, full of rocks and starfish (on the left). On the island there are no snack bars, electricity or anything else that can annoy the turtles.
The route continues to the Caves of Keri located just a few minutes away from the island, along the coast of Cape Marathia. The waters are blue and transparent due to the reflection of light. The caves are small and larger, allowing small ships to enter them. They also host various species of animals such as bats, the monk seal, and the Caretta Caretta turtle as well as various species of fish making them ideal for diving.
Crossing the crystal blue waters, exploring hidden caves and bays, we reach Myzithres beach. Myzithres, the small and the large one, are essentially two conical towering and whitewashed rocks, located just below the lighthouse of Keri. They are named after the local cheese produced on the island, Myzithra, which as we all know is white. The view is magnificent as after the cliff the rocks spring up, one next to the other, and compose a magnificent landscape. The crystal clear turquoise waters combined with the caves of Keri and the steep slopes compose an imposing landscape that no one will ever forget. The sea around them has strong currents and nearby there is the "Well of Oinousses", the point with the greatest depth in the Mediterranean, 4500m.
